The Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV), said it had revoked pilot licences from the captain and crew of flight HVN545 from Hanoi to Frankfurt (Germany) and asked them to re-train before flying again.

CAAV cited that on April 17, 2006, a Boeing 777 plane that was carrying more than 200 passengers lost contact with controllers for 65 minutes when flying over Ukraine, Poland and Czech Republic airspace.

Despite the efforts of the Czech Republic's air traffic control centre, no contact was made.

The two pilots on the Vietnam Airlines' Boeing 777 only made contact after the Czech airforce commissioned two jet fighters to escort the plane down and force it into an emergency landing.

The incident forced the CAAV to send an accident report to the institute for aviation accident investigation in the Czech Republic.

Regarding comments made in the press that the two pilots had fallen asleep, Duong Van Thao, head of the Flight Standards Department, rejected the information.

Thao said it was impossible because Vietnam aviation regulates that crew have to engage with the pilots every 15 minutes. In addition, the plane is also armed with warning equipment.

A CAAV official said this was the first such incident at Vietnam Airlines.
